|
|
As I'm sure many of you know, the FA: United convention is coming up in just a few months!
(Image borrowed from the FA:United banner ads.)
Because we've developed such a great relationship with Fur Affinity and the folks throwing the convention, Collar Factory is going to have a page in the Conbook.
This is where you come in: We have seen some truly stunning art on these forums, and we'd like to put some of that on our page.
The prize (IMPROVED): $75 off your next collar or cuff purchase or $50 cash to your PayPal account! Not to mention credit for your art on the page, and extreme bragging rights. PLUS: After the contest, all entries will be posted on a special, contest-entries-only thread on these forums, because even if we don't choose your image, we want everyone to see the beautiful work you've done.
The guidelines: Show us your character! Well, it doesn't actually have to be your character, but we would like to see a furry/animated character. PG-rated, please - no nudity, sexuality, or violence. Please depict the character prominently wearing a Collar Factory collar and cuffs, since that's what it's all about!
Technical (UPDATED): You may submit your entry in any web-friendly format, but if selected, the graphic must be available to us at a minimum of 8x10" at 300dpi, or in vector format. Send entries to webmaster@collarfactory.com, with the subject line "Furry United Art Contest Entry." Please keep all submissions under 2MB.
Due Date (EXTENDED): May 15!
Please note: You will receive credit for your art on the page, but we will retain all rights pertaining to the use of the image. We will not ever resell your image, but we may reuse it for future Collar Factory promotions, with credit. _________________ http://www.collarfactory.com/

When you say it has to be in vector form... does it have to be an actual vector image, or can it be a high-res PDF, because PDFs can be resized... I think... um. _________________

Not nearly to the point that a vector can. PDF images are made up of pixels, while a vector image is not. If they need the image to be very large, the pixels in a PDF image will still show, even at a high resolution. Most pro work is done in vectors. |

Unfortunately, Leurai is right. We need the flexibility of vectors.
However, there is a solution if you have a drawing you want to submit that you didn't make in Illustrator: Live Trace! If you can get access to Illustrator (try a library if you don't have Adobe software at home), there are functions that allow you to trace imported drawings. Once you become familiar with the basic tools of Illustrator and the difference b/w vector and pixel graphics, you can then tweak the resultant trace and have a reasonable, if not improved, recreation of the original piece. _________________ http://www.collarfactory.com/

Basically if you want a vector graphic, the ability to shade it beyond flat cell shading has gone out the window.
Also, Live Trace could potentially create a graphic width a blocky kind of result, degrading the image more than if it were a high resolution graphic.
In short, it would make more sense if people went high resolution (400 pixels per inch +) in the first place instead of using something like Live Trace after the fact. |

*shrugs* I'm just doing the art in Photoshop CS3 anyway at a high res, sizing shouldn't be an issue anway.
A note to the CF Staff running this, instead of making those that don't have Illustrator (I do but have no idea how to use it) maybe you can ask us to resize the pieces if need be, I for one have no problem resizing stuff. Also removes the hassle of you guys trying to make sizing be nice. Also, has the FA ConBook staff given you a set size? When I submitted my art to the Further Confusion con book they had set sizes that the artists could work off of, made it easier for all.
Quote from the FA page | Quote: | | Art should be 300dpi and/or high resolution scans (JPG, GIF or PNG only) | Unfortunately I cannot find anything on the site that talks' about the actual sizing for the ConBook..
Going off the FC ConBook sizing chart..
| Quote: |
Art Sizes-----------------Live Area--------------Trim------------------------Bleed
Full page-----------------7 1/2" x 10"------------8 1/2" x 11"--------------8 3/4" x 11 1/4"
Half horizontal---------7 1/2" x 4 7/8"
Half vertical------------3 5/8" x 10"
Quarter-----------------3 5/8" x 4 7/8"
Live area: all critical information should be inside these dimensions
Trim: actual page size
Bleed size: full-page artwork that extends to the edge of the page must
include the bleed size to assure that there will be no white margin!

| Will you guys be holding more art contests down the line if this one is a success? 'Cause I'm horrible at drawing anything that even slightly looks like an animal. D: |

We do have size limitations, but the drawing won't be the only element on the page. This is part of why it is 1000x easier for us to have a vector graphic - it will be much easier to integrate into the rest of our design. (Note: We are taking out a full page.) _________________ http://www.collarfactory.com/
